The qualification

DOT oral fluid collector qualification.

DOT established qualification requirements for oral fluid collectors in 49 CFR §40.35. The requirements include knowledge training, device-specific qualification training, an initial proficiency demonstration, and documentation of qualification. TestRight Academy’s program is structured around those collector qualification requirements.

Current DOT implementation status

Oral fluid is an authorized DOT specimen methodology, but DOT-regulated employers may not begin using it until at least two HHS-certified oral fluid laboratories are available. HHS currently lists no laboratories certified to conduct drug and specimen validity tests on oral fluid specimens. Completing collector qualification does not change that operational restriction.

FAQ

DOT oral fluid collector qualification — questions.

Is oral fluid an authorized DOT testing method?

Yes. DOT regulations authorize oral fluid as a specimen type. However, DOT-regulated employers cannot begin oral fluid testing until at least two HHS-certified oral fluid laboratories are available, and HHS currently lists none.

Does this program cover §40.35 qualification requirements?

The program is structured around the oral fluid collector training and proficiency requirements in 49 CFR §40.35, including the required device-specific proficiency demonstrations.

How many mock collections are required?

§40.35 requires five consecutive error-free mock collections for each device on which the collector qualifies. The live proficiency session covers the required mock scenarios.

Is qualification device-specific?

Yes. §40.35 requires proficiency in the operation of the particular oral fluid collection device or devices the collector will use.

How often is refresher training required?

§40.35 requires refresher training no less frequently than every five years, meeting the applicable qualification-training and proficiency requirements.

Can I perform DOT oral fluid collections immediately after qualifying?

Not currently. Collector qualification and operational availability are separate issues. HHS currently reports no certified oral fluid drug testing laboratories, and at least two must be available before employers may implement oral fluid testing.
